One in three Americans will face a substance use disorder (SUD) in their lifetime. Recent research highlights the alarming effects of developing an addiction to drugs or alcohol during adolescence.

Key Findings of Adolescent Substance Use Disorder

A study from the University of Michigan, published in JAMA Network Open, found that most 18-year-olds with severe SUD continue to struggle with substance use disorders well into adulthood, 32 years later.

Study Findings

  • 61.6% of adolescents with severe SUD symptoms at age 18 continued to have two or more SUD symptoms as adults, whether related to alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs.
  • Those with the most severe symptoms at 18 were at a higher risk for prescription drug misuse and monitoring issues in adulthood.
  • The majority of adults using opioids, sedatives, or tranquilizers in the past year had multiple SUD symptoms by age 18.

Importance of Early Intervention

The study underscores the need for thorough screening before prescribing potentially addictive medications and highlights the importance of early intervention. Catching and treating SUDs early can help reduce long-term adverse outcomes.
