The Link Between Childhood Trauma and Opioid Abuse

Research has long shown a link between opioid abuse and childhood trauma. A 2009 study in the Journal of Addictive Diseases found that among 113 people seeking treatment for opioid abuse:

  • 20.4% had experienced sexual abuse
  • 39.8% had experienced physical abuse
  • 60.2% had experienced emotional abuse
  • 23% had faced physical neglect
  • 65.5% had witnessed violence

Only 19.5% reported no childhood trauma at all.

Key Statistics: Trauma’s Role in Opioid Abuse and Addiction Risk

A more recent and significant study from the University of Georgia, published in the Journal of American College Health, suggests that young adults should be screened for childhood trauma when receiving pain management treatments. The study surveyed 1,402 college students, with two-thirds reporting at least one adverse childhood event, such as divorced parents, domestic violence, or food insecurity.

Key findings include:

  • Students who experienced one to three adverse events were twice as likely to misuse opioids.
  • Those with four or more adverse events were nearly three times more likely to develop opioid abuse issues.

The researchers recommend screening for childhood trauma to help prevent opioid addiction in vulnerable young adults and exploring how factors like racism, neighborhood violence, and grief contribute to the risk.
